The Disk Defragmenter's Analysis Report dialog box.
On NTFS volumes, Windows Server 2003 reserves a portion of the free space for a
system file called the Master File Table (MFT). The MFT is where Windows stores
all the information it needs to retrieve files from the volume. Windows stores part
of the MFT at the beginning of the volume and Windows reserves the MFT for
exclusive use, so the Disk Defragmenter cannot and does not move files to the
beginning of volumes.
The Chkdsk and ChkNTFS
Command-Line Tools
The chkdsk.exe command-line utility runs diagnostic tests on the file system
for a drive letter and generates a report. It also corrects file-system errors
when you use the /f option. If the computer is powered down suddenly due
to a loss of power, Windows Server 2003 marks each drive volume as "dirty"
by setting the dirty bit on each drive volume. When the system restarts,
chkdsk.exe automatically runs for each drive volume marked as dirty. For sys-
tem and boot partitions and volumes, you can specify for chkdsk.exe to run
during the next restart by typing the command chkntfs /c at a command
prompt. Extensive help information is available for both chkdsk.exe and
chkntfs.exe utilities by simply typing chkdsk /? or chkntfs /? at any command-
prompt window.
